World-Famous Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Predicts More Cold Weather; Cool-Weather Travel Activities Flourish in Pennsylvania Wilds
HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Hot off the press! Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter as he saw his shadow early this morning at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney. The thousands of visitors who assembled for the annual pilgrimage to Punxsutawney cheered as Inner Circle members coaxed Phil from his hole and translated Phil's prediction for the world.
"Phil's prediction means visitors to our state have more time for winter activities," said Mickey Rowley, Deputy Secretary of Tourism in the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Punxsutawney, located in the Pennsylvania Wilds Region, is well known for its resident free-roaming elk herd. In the southwestern part of the Commonwealth sits the Laurel Highlands - home to Seven Springs Ski Resort, one of the top 12 ski resorts in the East by readers of SKI magazine and the number one ski resort in the Mid-Atlantic. And, in the northeast, the Pocono Region is home to many ski resorts, including Elk Mountain, voted best-groomed by SKI magazine, as well as other outdoor adventures.
