Women's Adventure to Copper Canyon Semana Santa Celebration March 17-27
BERKELEY, Calif., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Every Easter week, the Semana Santa ritual of renewal in Mexico's Copper Canyon depicts the struggle between good and evil.
Not to give away the plot, but good always prevails in this colorful pageantry, which has unfolded for hundreds of years in the farming town of Norogachi. Semana Santa is one of the last authentic ceremonies for the Tarahumara, unlike the tourist attractions staged along the railway.
Call of the Wild, which has offered women's adventure trips since 1978, will be the only travel company visiting Norogachi during Easter this year. The former woman mayor of Norogachi will supply meals and housing. There are no hotels there.
Painted Tarahumara people will make their way to town from remote ranchos. Bonfires are lit at night, and there is drumming and dancing in the streets, which gets louder as homemade corn beer is consumed.
The day before Easter, the drama reaches a crescendo as effigies of Judas and Christ are pitted against each other. The passion of Christ and the tradition of the Tarahumara blend religion and culture for an unforgettable experience.
The local guide will be Santiago Jim Barnaby, who has been exploring Copper Canyon's backcountry for 27 years.
Copper Canyon is considered the undiscovered "Nepal of the West." The Tarahumara live in much the same way as they have for 500 years. Their homes are connected by a network of steep trails and to walk 10 miles is nothing to these people.
Copper Canyon is a series of seven canyons, featuring the second and third deepest canyons in North America. Trip participants will see magnificent canyons while riding the Primera Express train.
The train ride through the state of Chihuahua is also memorable. Climbing to an elevation of 8,000 feet in the Sierra Madre Mountains, the train weaves over 37 bridges and through 86 tunnels.
At Creel, trip participants will get off the train and travel by van to Norogachi. During their stay, they'll visit a pottery village and local craftswomen, and take a mule ride to an archeological site. Following Semana Santa, clients will return to Creel by van, re-board the Primera Express and ride to Chihuahua.
