HRH The Princess Royal to Make First Visit to the BVI
TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Government and people of the British Virgin Islands will welcome Her Royal Highness (HRH) The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) to the Territory for a Royal Visit from February 23 to 25.
The highlights of The Princess Royal's public appearances will include the unveiling of a plaque for the dedication of the Peebles Hospital Expansion Project; the inauguration of the Mangrove Wetland Preservation Project at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College; a tour of the Joseph Reynold O'Neal Botanical Gardens; an investiture ceremony for two BVIslanders; and a presentation of certificates from the Royal Yachting Association to some of the BVI's sailors at the official opening of the Watersports Center.
The Princess Royal will also meet representatives of non-governmental and service organizations, including the BVI Red Cross; open the new communications center at the Department of Disaster Management; and tour the Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) headquarters.
His Excellency Governor Thomas Macan said the Princess Royal's visit will be an important one for the Territory, adding that he considers it a great privilege to have the opportunity to welcome The Queen's daughter to the BVI as the first Member of the Royal Family to stay in the new Government House.
The Princess Royal is President of the Royal Yachting Association and Governor Macan said it is therefore appropriate for her to visit the sailing capital of the Caribbean. The Governor encouraged the people of the Territory to extend a warm welcome to The Princess Royal and to make the occasion a memorable one.
The most recent Royal Visit to the Territory was that of His Royal Highness The Duke of York (Prince Andrew) in March 2000.
