BACKGROUND: The main route from Indiana into the Chicago metro area, I-
80/94 (Kingery Expressway) carries more than triple the
traffic volume as originally planned. It was designed in the
1950s for about 50,000 vehicles per day.
In the past 50 years, I-80/94 has evolved into a major east-
west route for interstate commerce in what is known as the
Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee (GCM) Corridor. The Kingery is a short
yet vital link in the Southland Corridor.
The reconstruction of mainline I-80/94-from Calumet Ave.
(U.S. 41) in Indiana through I-80/294 (Tri-State Tollway)-is
scheduled to begin March 5th (weather permitting).
By the end of 2007, a multi-agency coordinated effort between
IDOT, Illinois Tollway and the Indiana Department of
Transportation will result in rebuilt roads, new bridges and
an additional lane for traffic all the way from I-65 in
Indiana to 95th Street along the Tri-State Tollway
