CheckPoint Mailers(TM) Announces Its 19th Airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- CheckPoint Mailers, the nation's leading self-service system that enables travelers to mail home those items that airport security will not allow onboard aircraft, announces that it has contracted with its 19th airport. The company provides services to airports from Boston to San Diego, with more to come in the next few months.

"We are delighted to add Reno, Nev., as our latest airport," said Heather Lowry, president. "It joins 18 other airports in our system," she said. "This would never have been possible without our close working relationship with Homeland Security and the U.S. Postal Service. We are grateful to them for their positive support for our program."

CheckPoint Mailers enables travelers at a Transportation Safety Administration checkpoint to complete a mailing label, provide payment information, and slip the item into a resealable plastic bag that is then placed into the secured CheckPoint Mailers box. Typically, a traveler's only other alternative is to permanently surrender the item to security personnel or return to the check-in ticket counter in hopes that the airline can retrieve luggage so that the traveler can pack the item in it. (This is virtually impossible when flight times are within the hour.) Cost for most items is $8. "Most customers are delighted to have this option when they have an item of significant monetary or sentimental value," Lowry said.

The company also operates in Akron, Boston, Charlotte, Cleveland, Dallas-Ft. Worth, El Paso, Greensboro, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Orange County, Pensacola, Raleigh-Durham, Rochester, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose.

Unusual items shipped have included a physician's tracheotomy kit, numerous Leatherman tools, lots of old Boy Scout knives, a dissection kit, keys, and even "The Club" car theft prevention device. Other "keepers" are special scissors, manicure kits, and cigarette lighters.

Founded in 2003, the company is headquartered in Charlotte. Travelers who have used the service are positive about the experience and a bit sheepish about showing up at the airport with something that is not allowed on planes, according to Lowry. "We get letters from these folks routinely saying: 'Thanks for making sure I got my treasured Boy Scout knife back ... I've had it since I was a kid and wouldn't want to lose it to security.'"
