Lufthansa to Launch Non-Stop Flights to Guangzhou as Part of New Summer Schedule

Flights to/from Asia-Pacific rise 3.5 percent compared to previous year

SINGAPORE, Feb. 24 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Lufthansa German Airlines is strengthening its position as the leading European airline in Asia-Pacific with the start of new daily non-stop flights between Guangzhou and Frankfurt. The start of the non-stop service is part of Lufthansa's new summer schedule for 2005 which will run from 27 March to 29 October. During the summer schedule, Lufthansa will operate 149 flights to/from Asia-Pacific, an increase of 3.5 percent compared to the summer schedule 2004.

Lufthansa strengthens leadership in Asia: Daily non-stop flights to Guangzhou

The launch of daily non-stop flights between Guangzhou and Frankfurt from 28 March 2005 will reduce the travel time on Lufthansa flights between the two cities by five hours, giving greater ease and convenience to passengers. Lufthansa flights between Guangzhou and Frankfurt currently include a short stopover in Shanghai.

The flights will be operated by Lufthansa's state-of-the-art Airbus A340- 600 aircraft which features its new Business Class with the longest flat seat/bed in its class worldwide. The new non-stop service between Frankfurt and Guangzhou will continue on to the Philippines' capital Manila.

Expansion in India and Japan

The start of non-stop flights to Guangzhou is part of the expansion of Lufthansa's network in Asia-Pacific. On 17 February, the airline launched non-stop flights between Frankfurt and Hyderabad, giving it a fifth gateway in India joining Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. Hyderabad is one of India's fastest growing cities due to its rapidly expanding technology industry. Flights to Bangalore will return to their previous five a week after being increased to seven a week on a seasonal basis during the winter schedule.

On 19 February, Lufthansa added two additional flights per week between Frankfurt and Nagoya in Japan, bringing the total number of flights on the route to seven a week. The increase in flights to Nagoya coincided with the opening of the city's brand new Central Japan International Airport.

Better connections for passengers travelling to/from Southeast Asia

As part of its new summer schedule, Lufthansa has made a number of network improvements to give passengers better connections travelling to and from Southeast Asia. From 28 March, there will be a new daily flight operating on the route between Frankfurt-Bangkok-Jakarta. Previously flights from Frankfurt to Jakarta operated via Singapore.

The routing via Bangkok offers Lufthansa passengers significantly better connections as Bangkok is served by daily flights to/from both Frankfurt and Munich so passengers can choose to fly to which ever city suits them best. The transfer times in Bangkok have been specially selected to be optimal for connecting passengers.

Global network expansion: Additional frequencies and new destinations

During the upcoming summer schedule, the number of flights operated by Lufthansa worldwide will rise to 12,700 a week to 177 destinations in 73 countries. This represents an increase of 1.5 percent in total flights, and an increase of 2.4 percent in long-haul flights. When codeshare partners are included, the total number of flights bearing Lufthansa flight numbers will be 24,500 a week to 375 destinations in 93 countries.

Other highlights of the new summer schedule include a new daily flight from Munich to Washington and a new three-times-a-week service between Frankfurt and Port Harcourt in Nigeria. From Munich, passengers will be able to travel the new non-stop connection starting on 2 May. The route will be operated by a Lufthansa Airbus A340-300.

From 7 April, Lufthansa will offer even more connections to the growing oil and gas markets of West Africa through the launch of a new three-times-a- week service between Frankfurt and Port Harcourt in Nigeria. Nigeria is the most important oil-producing country in Africa and has numerous oil fields are located close to the airport in Port Harcourt in the Southeast of the country. After stopping in Port Harcourt, the flight continues to the capital of Nigeria, Abuja.
