Snowy February + March Storm = Best Conditions of Season in Vermont
MONTPELIER, Vt., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A winter that that began quietly entered March with a flourish as a major new storm left up to a foot of new snow across Vermont on Tuesday. Light snow continues to fall and is in the forecast for the rest of the week. The early-March blast follows on the heels of a near-record February, leaving Vermont with the best outdoor recreation conditions of the season.
The unofficial snowfall total of 29.7 inches recorded in Burlington in February was 80% above the monthly average of 16.5 inches, and just under 5 inches off the all-time February record. Many areas of Vermont, especially in the higher elevations, received much heavier totals. According to the Vermont Ski Areas Association, (http://www.skivermont.com/) most ski resorts recorded 60 inches or more of new snow during February, with some areas topping 72 inches.
The vast majority of Vermont's 1,500 kilometers of Nordic ski and snowshoe terrain is now fully open and being groomed as are most of the state's 5,000 miles of snowmobile trails. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) currently rates riding conditions as "good to excellent" over most of the state. The abundant snow has also breathed life into a variety of other popular winter activities like sleigh rides and sledding.
"We got off to a slow start in December and January," said Vermont Tourism and Marketing Commissioner Bruce Hyde, "but February was one of our snowiest ever and March is off to a great start. We are definitely seeing the best conditions of the season right now, and this new storm will just keep that momentum going."
Many visitor-related business owners are now intently focused on making up for lost time and say they feel confident that as long as people know about the excellent conditions in Vermont, they'll visit, even if it is considered later in the season. They also say a big snowstorm on Town Meeting Day is a good omen, because the last time that happened in 2001, Vermont received a record March snowfall of 47.6 inches.
