Rendell Administration Releases More Than $16 Million in State and Federal Funds to 31 PA Airports

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 9 /PRNewswire/ — On behalf of Governor Edward G. Rendell, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E., today announced the release of more than $16 million in state and federal funds to help finance improvements at 31 public-use airports in the Commonwealth.

“Maintaining and improving our airport system is an investment in air safety and provides a boost to the economic vitality of the region and the state,” Secretary Biehler said. “Airports are a major economic catalyst, providing communities across the state with thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in economic benefits each year.”

Biehler said the funds will be used for a variety of projects, including land acquisition, environmental and airport development planning, runway and taxiway reconstruction, maintenance and repair, security and lighting.

During this funding period, the Federal Aviation Administration is giving the state a federal block grant totaling more than $16 million. The state’s share totals more than $407,000.

Recipients of federal block grants and state aviation development funds are:

Beaver County:
— Beaver County Airport, Beaver Falls, $73,125, to conduct an airport
master plan.
— Zelienople Municipal Airport, Zelienople, $195,000, for installation
of an automated weather observation system.

Bedford County:
— Bedford County Airport, Bedford, $162,501, to update their airport
layout plan and to conduct a feasibility study for an approach
lighting system.

Bradford County:
— Bradford County Airport, Towanda, $243,750, for the acquisition of
snow removal equipment.

Bucks County:
— Doylestown Airport, Doylestown, $877,500, to construct a storm water
system at the airport.
— Quakertown Airport, Quakertown, $2,745,600, to widen and rehabilitate
the runway and relocate a taxiway.

Butler County:
— Butler County Airport, Butler, $2,368,332, to pave and light a runway
extension.

Carbon County:
— Jake Arner Memorial Airport, Lehighton, $374,250, to relocate a
wetland, construct a hangar taxiway and undertake other site
improvements.

Centre County:
— Mid-State Airport, Philipsburg, $276,375, to remove and mitigate
runway obstructions, make pavement repairs to the runway and to
purchase snow removal equipment.

Chester County:
— Brandywine Airport, West Chester, $880,425, to extend a parallel
taxiway and to install runway end identifier lights, a precision
approach path indicator and an automated weather observation system.
— Chester County/G.O. Carlson Airport, Coatesville, $1,747,816, for an
environmental review and design work for a south apron and land
acquisition.

Clarion County:
— Clarion County Airport, Clarion, $341,250, to acquire land in the
runway protection zone.

Clinton County:
— William T. Piper Memorial Airport, Lock Haven, $162,435, to design a
taxiway lighting and airport signage system.

Columbia County:
— Bloomsburg Municipal Airport, Bloomsburg, $73,125, to conduct an
airport wide environmental assessment and archeological study.

Crawford County:
— Port Meadville Airport, Meadville, $408,542, for obstruction removal
and to acquire land easements in the runway protection zone.

Elk County:
— St. Marys Municipal Airport, St. Marys, $81,250, to design the
relocation of the airport access road.

Erie County:
— Corry-Lawrence Airport, Corry, $205,263, to purchase snow removal
equipment.

Fayette County:
— Connellsville Airport, Connellsville, $312,000, for environmental
mitigation of a hangar.

Jefferson County:
— Punxsutawney Municipal Airport, Punxsutawney, $96,804, to install a
generic visual glideslope indicator.

Luzerne County:
— Hazleton Municipal Airport, Hazleton, $138,750, to design a runway
rehabilitation project.

Mercer County:
— Greenville Municipal Airport, Greenville, $536,250, for runway
rehabilitation.
— Grove City Airport, Grove City, $97,500, to rehabilitate a hangar
apron and taxiway.

Mifflin County:
— Mifflin County Airport, Reedsville, $136,500, to remove approach
obstructions and to buy snow removal equipment.

Montgomery County:
— Pottstown Limerick Airport, Pottstown, $153,947, to install perimeter
fencing.
— Pottstown Municipal Airport, Pottstown, $73,125, to update the
airport layout plan.

Schuylkill County:
— Schuylkill County/Joe Zerbey Airport, Pottsville, $534,300, to
rehabilitate aprons.

Snyder County:
— Penn Valley Airport, Selinsgrove, $2,302,500, for various
improvements to the airport runway protection zone, taxiway and
runway.

Somerset County:
— Somerset County Airport, Somerset, $416,194, to rehabilitate the
apron and widen and rehabilitate taxiway.

Venango County:
— Titusville Airport, Titusville, $195,981, to construct a taxiway
connector.
— Venango Regional Airport, Franklin, $267,150, to acquire an airport
multi-purpose vehicle.

Washington County:
— Washington County Airport, Washington, $253,500, to conduct an
airport master plan and an environmental assessment and to design
runway rehabilitation.

Biehler noted that the funding for the airport improvement grants is provided through a percentage of the state and federal tax on aviation fuels.
