Algonquin Hotel Renovation Blends 21st Century Amenities with 1920s Charm
How does New York’s oldest luxury hotel enjoy its status as a “historic landmark,” yet compete with the hot, minimalist lodging next door?
This month, the Algonquin Hotel, home of the historic Round Table, is debuting cutting-edge amenities. Flat-screen TVs, business workstations, complementary iPods and free wireless Internet are now available in every guest room and suite.
Downstairs, at the street level, patrons return to a gentler time. New carpeting and upholstery have refreshed the relaxed luxury that made “the Gonk” the gathering place for the Algonquin Round Table wits (aka “the Vicious Circle”). The hotel has even restored the Round Table itself, where Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and others earned a reputation for clever wordplay and long lunches. At table, visitors now can dine on newly-purchased reproductions of the hotel’s original period china and enjoy recently-revived High Tea.
Alternatively, in the manner of Dorothy Parker, they can repair to the hotel’s newly-renovated Blue Bar for her signature drink: a martini.
Or, as Parker herself put it, “Why don’t you slip out of those wet clothes and into a dry martini?”
