SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ — The Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC), the Bay Area’s premier, award-winning family facility that offers total health, fitness and wellness programs for all ages, today announced the results of the USTA Girls’ 18 National Championships held Sunday, August 7 – Sunday, August 14 at the AVAC tennis facilities. Each year this tournament attracts the top junior female tennis players to compete for a wild card entry into the US Open. Past winners of this tournament include Lindsay Davenport (1991), Jennifer Capriati (1989) and Laura Granville (1998 and 1999).

In the singles competition Mary Gambale rose up to the challenge in Sunday’s finals to defeat Alexa Glatch, who was the favorite to win the tournament, (7-6(8), 5-7, 6-1). Gambale will now travel to New York for the US Open to battle the world’s best women and junior players. However, Glatch did not leave the tournament empty handed. In the doubles finals on Saturday, Glatch and her partner Vania King, successfully defeated Krysty Marcio and Jessica Nguyen (6-1, 7-5). Glatch and King will also compete in the US Open.

This completes the 16th year that AVAC has been host to this tournament. The tournament helps raise money for the National Tennis Championships (NTC), a nonprofit organization that will donate money to the San Jose chapter of After-School All-Stars (ASAS), an organization that provides children with opportunities to participate in sports, educational, cultural and community enrichment programs. On Wednesday, August 10, the tournament hosted Kid’s Day in which more than 100 children from the Greater San Jose’s ASAS came to learn to play tennis on the AVAC courts.
