Campaign Launched on Independence Day Provides Travel to Injured or Wounded Servicemen and Women and Their Families
FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — American Airlines announced today that more than 110 million miles have been donated to Operation Hero Miles, a program supporting U.S. troops who have been injured or wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan.
American Airlines launched a campaign dubbed the “Spirit of 1776″ on Independence Day weekend with a goal of generating contributions of 17.76 million miles. To date, AAdvantage(R) members have donated more than 105 million miles. To fulfill its pledge, American has contributed 8.8 million miles to the campaign. In total, the donated miles will benefit more than 3,500 servicemen and women and their families.
“As a result of this campaign, the contributions from our members and American Airlines will provide thousands of injured troops and qualifying families the opportunity to spend more time together,” said American Airlines Executive Vice President Dan Garton. “We are hopeful this donation will help comfort wounded servicemen and women in the days and weeks to come.”
Anna Powell of Ridgedale, Mo., will make her fourth trip this month to see her grandson, Army First Sergeant Howard Briel, at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. “Without the help of Operation Hero Miles, there is no way under the sun I could afford to make these trips to spend time with him,” Powell said. She, along with other members of her family, has relied on Operation Hero Miles to ensure there is always a family member at Sgt. Briel’s bedside.
“Helping bring families and loved ones to the bedside of wounded soldiers is an honor,” said Kurt Stache, President, AAdvantage Marketing Programs. “These contributions are a very small way to salute the brave men and women who continue to work for our freedom.”
The donations include a contribution of one million miles from employees of AeroThrust, a Miami-based company specializing in the maintenance and repair of jet aircraft engines. “We’re honored to be part of an effort that supports the men and women that have put their lives on the line for our country,” said AeroThrust Chairman and CEO Jack Risko. “As a supplier to American’s maintenance base in Tulsa, Okla., our company is proud to join American and hundreds of other AAdvantage members in providing convalescent leave to injured troops and travel for family members visiting troops injured in the line of duty.”
