American Voyager Travel Honors 50s Rock Stars...
Cruise-Concerts Tribute Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper
ADDISON, Texas, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Many people who were alive in 1959 remember "the day the music died" -- when a plane crash killed rock-n-roll superstars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper. Don McLean memorialized the tragedy in his song "Bye, Bye Miss American Pie." Nearly 50 years later, however, the music is still alive. Now, American Voyager Travel will commemorate it with a cruise on September 2-9, 2006.
"Wave On 2006" will give 50s rockers another chance to Rock On. Besides remarkable Holly, Valens and Big Bopper impersonators, Grammy Award winner Tommy Allsup will perform in concert. Allsup is the lead guitarist who lost a coin toss and a seat on the rock stars' fatal flight. His music, along with the other musicians, transformed the sound of rock-n-roll and influenced artists such as Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones.
As music director for the cruise, Tommy Allsup will also oversee a ballroom concert, "Stay All Night" jam sessions, as well as a soc hop and dance contest. Women are encouraged to dress as "Peggy Sue" -- the character Buddy Holly immortalized in his groundbreaking song with the same name. Men are also encouraged to wear period clothes such as cardigans or ruffled tuxedo shirts to share their enthusiasm.
In addition to the music, "Wave On" will also host "Rave On" -- Buddy Holly's official 70th Birthday Bash. The rock star's widow, Maria Elena Holly will be onboard to sign autographs and take pictures.
The 7-Day Royal Caribbean cruise will leave Miami for Hispaniola, Jamaica, Grand Caymans and Cozumel. While the ship can carry nearly 4,000 people, only 400 cabins have access to the Buddy Holly tribute. In addition to music and celebrity visits, guests will also receive two beach towels, two fanny packs and tickets to a bon voyager cocktail reception.
