Jamaican Musher Devon Anderson Places 8th at East Meets West Dryland Challenge
OCHO RIOS, JAMAICA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 29, 2006 -- Jamaican musher Devon Anderson in his second race of the season enjoyed an 8th place finish, out of a field of 18, with a combined time of 28:14:20 in the Pro 4 Dog Rig Class Sled Dog Race at the East Meets West Dryland Challenge, held at the Brainerd International Raceway, November 18-19, 2006. Jim Benson of Gold Rush Racing in his second first-place finish of the season posted a combined race time of 20:22:20.
Anderson raced for the Chukka Caribbean Adventures Jamaica Dogsled Team with a four-dog team provided by Ken & Donna Davis out of Elfstone Kennels in Twig, MN. "The 3.7-mile track was a challenge and I lost some time in my first heat when we had a brush up with another team; we had to stop and untangle but that's what makes sled dog racing so exciting and such fun. That's racing! The second day's heat went without a glitch and my dogs were magnificent throughout, so I'm very happy with the outcome, it's been a terrific experience," says Anderson.
"Devon's finish was very respectable with the level of competition present," says Dave Steele, race organizer and Executive Director of ISDRA, the International Sled Dog Racing Association. "We had 86 racers with representatives from Jamaica -- of course -- Korea, Canada and many states including New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Nebraska. We hope to be able to have an even bigger field at next year's event."
Anderson had previously finished in second place out of a field of eleven in the Pro 4 Dog Rig Class Sled Dog Race at the Byllesby Dryland Classic held in Cannon Falls, MN, October 14-15, 2006. The number of dryland rig races is steadily increasing due to climactic changes and the lack of reliable snowfall for conventional sled dog races. But Anderson is looking forward to another opportunity to race in the snow and he may have an opportunity in an exhibition race at the Nestlé Purina PetCare-sponsored sled dog rally at the 2007 Saint Paul Winter Carnival, the nation's oldest and largest winter festival, January 26-February 4, 2007. And there will be plenty of snow when he heads to Canada as a guest attendee at the 2007 Yukon Quest 1000-Mile International Sled Dog Race. Although he will not be racing in this event, he was invited to participate in the opening ceremony, the mushers' banquet and to witness the start of the race.
Sponsored by singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville, the Jamaica Dogsled Team is the newest addition to the Chukka Caribbean Adventures family, just one of the many creative ideas of founder and CEO Danny Melville. Formed out of a motley crew of mixed breed dogs found on the street or through the Jamaican Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (JSPCA), team membership means a new and better life of care and meaning for the team dogs. Anderson, along with the Jamaican sled dogs, is featured in Palm Pictures' upcoming documentary feature "Sun Dogs" and their training continues at Chukka Cove Farm, Ocho Rios in preparation for the unique "Jamaica Dogsled Team Tour" and "Dogsled Encounter" to be offered later this fall.
