Arts and Culture Just for Grown-ups? Not in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Art-loving parents who cringe at the thought of bringing the kids to a theater performance or a contemporary art exhibit may want to think again. Nationally renowned museums and theaters offer creative family programs that make a family getaway to Minneapolis enjoyable for parents and kids.
Parents, want to experience the newly expanded contemporary Walker Art Center designed by acclaimed Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron? Pick up a WAC Pack, chock-full of creative activities for the kids, at the front desk before exploring. Don't miss the neighboring Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Grab a Garden Pack and let the kids blow off some steam in the 11-acre park, one of the largest urban sculpture gardens in the U.S. Not far from the Walker is the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Stop by on a Sunday and, while parents peruse the extensive Chinese art collection, kids can enjoy art activities, treasure hunts and more as part of Ford Free Sunday.
Minneapolis is home to the only theater for young people to win a Tony Award, The Children's Theatre Company (CTC). Its incredible, yet reasonably- priced, performances delight audiences of all ages. Save vacation cash by getting rush tickets at a substantial discount 15 minutes prior to performances. An expansion opening in October will add a Teen Stage to the CTC. Another not-to-be-missed theater event is the Minnesota Fringe Festival. The largest non-juried theater festival in the nation, it features a Kids and Teen Fringe Aug. 4-14. All performances are just one hour and $5 for kids.
There's no better place to be in Minneapolis in the summer than outside. Catch an outdoor concert by the water at the Lake Harriet Bandshell. And, don't forget the swimsuits. The nearby Lake Calhoun has a sandy beach complete with a playground. In June, downtown's Peavey Plaza has outdoor concerts Monday through Friday at 5 p.m. And, the Minnesota Orchestra's Sommerfest offers an array of family activities in July and August.
