Austrian Airlines First European Carrier to Fly to Iraq
New York- November 10, 2006: Austrian Airlines will become the first European airline to fly to Iraq, it was announced today by Paul Paflik, General Manager the Americas, with its commencement of flights to the northern Iraqi city of Erbil on December 11. Erbil is Iraq’s fourth largest city and a burgeoning industrial center -- providing rapid and safe access to the cities of Mosul, Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah.
“Our new route to Erbil,” commented Paflik, “comes in the tradition of pioneering that has made Austrian the airline with one of the most comprehensive route networks not only in the Middle East, but also in Eastern and Central Europe and in the new republics that were formerly part of the USSR.” Airbus A319 service from Vienna to Erbil will start with twice weekly service (Monday and Friday) with its flights timed to connect seamlessly with Austrian’s arrivals from its North American gateways (New York, Washington and Toronto), as well as from dozens of European cities.
Set to mark its 50th anniversary in 2008, Austrian Airlines operates the only non-stop flights from the U.S. and Canada to Vienna. Austrian is a member of the Star Alliance and flies to 130 cities in 66 countries with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft. Austrian Airlines passengers can earn miles on Austrian’s Miles & More or United Airlines Mileage Plus programs.
