Best Barbecue Places in Texas
LULING, Texas, July 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- More than a few restaurants lay claim to the finest barbecue in Texas. The argument is sure to simmer like slo-smoked ribs now that Reader's Digest has named City Market in Luling the "Best All Around" in its posting of Lone Star State barbecue joints. The rankings are part of the magazine's first-ever multimedia report created exclusively for the web, which includes photos of Texas barbecue and the people who fix it, a gonzo article of life on the road, and a home video, "The Great Texas Barbecue Tour."
The Reader's Digest barbecue report is accompanied by a column in the magazine's August issue, on newsstands beginning July 25, with tips on preparing barbecue at home. The complete multimedia report can be found at http://www.rd.com/bbq.
During the four-day tour across Central Texas, Reader's Digest researched and visited 15 restaurants widely regarded among barbecue aficionados to be the best in Texas, if not the world. Category winners were Southside Market and BBQ in Elgin (Best Brisket, and Best Sausage), Opie's Barbecue in Spicewood (Best Pork Ribs), and The Salt Lick B.B.Q. in Driftwood (Best Sauces, and Best Place to Take Your Momma or Your Date). Full results including other winners and runners up are posted online. Readers are invited to vote on the site for their favorite Texas barbecue place or suggest other spots around the country.
Reporter-at-large for this gut-busting assignment was Thomas O. Ryder, Chairman of The Reader's Digest Association, Inc., and co-owner of four award-winning Cookhouse barbecue restaurants in Connecticut. Ryder is a Louisiana-raised barbecue expert who has judged national competitions including The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, in Memphis. He also is the writer of the list of tips to better one's barbecue in the August Reader's Digest.
Accompanying Ryder was his brother Rob, also a lifelong barbecue man, and their spouses Darlene and Francie. In his report, Ryder shares the clan's colorful tales of pit-fueled rooms, authentic honky tonk decor and smoky secrets from "The Great Texas Barbecue Tour."
