Jazz Greats Leon Oakley and Jim Cullum Will Lead an Eight-Piece Band With Several Turk Murphy Band Alumni

SAN FRANCISCO, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bay City Stompers, a group of eight traditional jazz greats, will present a spirited concert honoring Turk Murphy, the Bay Area jazz legend. The performance will take place on Sunday, October 16, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bimbo's in downtown San Francisco. The San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation is sponsor for this tribute, an encore to the sold out performance last year at Townsend Center that honored Lu Watters.

Murphy, a great trombonist, played in the original Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band that lit up the Dawn Club in downtown San Francisco after World War II and had a big influence on traditional jazz nationwide. After the Watters band split up in 1951, Murphy founded his own band and played for many years at Earthquake McGoon's well into the 1980s in the basement of the last house of ill repute in downtown San Francisco, formerly the William Tell Hotel at 630 Clay Street.

The band for this tribute concert will showcase a number of top musicians who played with Turk -- Leon Oakley, on cornet, Bill Carter on clarinet, and John Gill on banjo. The rest of the band includes Turk's favorite trombone player, Tom Bartlett, and the young traditionalists Clint Baker, drums; Marty Eggers, piano; and Ray Cadd, tuba. The band also will showcase Jim Cullum, cornet, whose band performs every week on Public Radio International's radio series, Riverwalk Jazz. Oakley and Cullum have starred together in many traditional jazz performances. This special concert is underwritten by O'Reilly, Danko & Yamane, the trial law firm headquartered in San Mateo.

Tickets for the concert are $38 and may be obtained from City Box Office, by phone, 415-392-4400 or on the website at http://www.Cityboxoffice.com.
