Beach Tennis USA Comes to Virginia Beach

Emerging Sport to Be Featured at the North American Sand Soccer Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., June 8 /PRNewswire/ — Beach Tennis USA, the organization responsible for launching the sport of beach tennis in North America, will hold its third major competitive event in the U.S. when it joins the North American Sand Soccer Championships (NASSC) in Virginia Beach on June 10 – 12, 2005.

Beach tennis, which is very popular on the island of Aruba and also played in several European countries, is brand new to America. It merges the skills of tennis, beach volleyball and badminton into one exciting sport. It can be played both competitively and recreationally, and because it’s so simple to play, it appeals to athletes and non-athletes of all ages.

Beach tennis is played on a regulation beach volleyball court. Using regulation tennis rackets, two players on each team try to hit a tennis ball back and forth, directly over the net, without letting it hit the sand. Only one hit per team is allowed on each volley and the scoring is exactly like tennis: 15 – 30 – 40, with no-ad at deuce. If a player’s serve hits the net and goes over, it counts — just like in beach volleyball.

Approximately 70,000 people are expected to gather for this year’s North American Sand Soccer Championships. Beach Tennis USA will have six courts set up at the NASSC for exhibitions and clinics. The courts will be located on Atlantic Ave, between Eighth Street and Ninth Street, and matches will be held Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rackets will be provided courtesy of Beach Tennis USA and there is no registration fee so everyone is encouraged to participate. An evening beach tennis demonstration will be held on Friday from 7-10 p.m.

Beach tennis, like sand soccer, has become increasingly popular both as a competitive sport and a family-fun recreational activity. To learn more about beach tennis, visit
