The large, well-appointed canvas tents with thatch roofs and hard floors, beneath a canopy of huge Winterthorn trees, take advantage of this picturesque site – a site so beautiful that David Livingstone used it twice on his travels. Each of the bedrooms sleeps two people and contains all luxurious details needed for comfort. The en-suite bathrooms are open air – ideal for baths beneath a star-lit sky -- surrounded by stone and reed walls for absolute privacy. All fittings in the bath are made from natural materials found near the lodge.

Run by the same family for three generations, Chongwe offers warm hospitality and personal attention to all of its guests. Delicious meals are served al fresco on a lush lawn beside the river with a rustic bar and plunge pool nearby. Wonderful views of Machingo Mountains to the north add magic to the location.

Highly knowledgeable and professional guides provide as exhilarating, safe and informative African experience. Huge population of elephants, lion, leopard, wild dogs and over 250 species of bird life, make game viewing in this area of Zambia exceptional. Guests have a choice of day and night game drives in open safari vehicles, guided walking tours, canoeing or motor boats to view wildlife along the banks of the river. Fishing is also an option, especially Tiger Fish angling. And with no fences at Chongwe, there are no barriers for an extraordinary safari.

Recently, the stunning Chongwe River House has been built near the camp. This extraordinary four-bedroom house is created from ferro cement walls and local wild wood. The walls are integrated with the branches of the trees, so there are no straight lines, just a gracefully flowing design. Many unique appointments make this one of the most extraordinary house designs anywhere.
