Ex-Camper Tells How to Avoid Homesickness (Booklet)
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Lots of first-time campers get the sleep-away camp jitters, but one camper decided to do something about it. Like many first-timers, Bibi Schweitzer, then age 11, was nervous about being away from home for the first time: "My mom didn't have very helpful suggestions, so I started talking to friends who had already been to sleep- away camp," says Bibi. "They knew just what to tell me, and I had a great time.

Bibi's Quick Tips for Avoiding Homesickness:
* Almost everyone takes a stuffed animal or some type of personal
belonging. Don't be embarrassed about packing something special to feel
more at home.
* Pictures of family and friends are fun to have with you as reminders
from home and so that your camp friends can see what people you talk
about look like.
* Bring a disposable camera. It's fun to take pictures of your camp
friends, and with a disposable camera you don't have to feel
responsible for something valuable.
* At camp, KEEP BUSY and include yourself in whatever kids are doing. If
you're with people and having fun, you won't have time to think about
being homesick.
* It's fun to get mail. Write to lots of people, and be sure to include
your camp address inside the letter. Friends may have lost or
misplaced your address. If you provide it for them each time, they'll
be able to write back.
Now 21 and a student at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, Bibi has revised and updated the booklet several times. The advice is addressed to the campers themselves; a parent-to-parent letter with additional suggestions is included.
