Makeover Contest Unearths Everyday Heroes

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ — When national retailer Camping World decided to join in the makeover craze sweeping the country with their own RV Makeover Contest, they thought it would be fun to host an essay contest. They put together contest rules and decided on a Grand Prize Package of $20,000, including $5,000 cash and a $15,000 merchandise and service package. Everyone looked forward to reading the thousands of entries that they anticipated pouring in.

And pour in they did. Essays came via entry forms at Camping World stores nationwide and the US mail. In all, more than 4,000 entries were received. Each one was read carefully by the official essay team and judged accordingly.

While overwhelmed by the response to the contest, no one could have prepared the judges’ panel for the touching, heartfelt, completely unselfish letter submitted by Tom and Karen Moulton of Citrus Heights, California that was deemed the winner.

Try as we may, words cannot do it justice. Tom was the wordsmith and the artist on the letter with input from the whole family. They even used glow- in-the-dark paint for emphasis. Excerpts taken from the Moultons’ letter are included below. Please view http://www.campingworld.com/MOWinner/index.cfm for the complete text of the letter as well as a link to the original letter.

“For 17 years we’ve been shanghaied and drug off by lots of wonderful
foster children. Many have had mental or physical challenges but still
show us no mercy. Down syndrome, being deaf or having C.P., trumps
sore feet. Some are with us for hours or days. Others have stayed
years, some we’ve adopted. Every child’s a wonderful challenge and an
inspiration.”

“We have taken children on their first camping trips, their first look
at nature and often their first look at what a loving functional family
looks like. These positive experiences last a lifetime for them and for
their older or more capable siblings.”

“We currently have seven (plus two grown) children living and serving at
our home. They would love to show us America, from California’s coast
and Missions to the majestic view of the Grand Canyon, the awesome old
faithful of Yellowstone and maybe we’ll make it to Washington D.C. and
the Statue of Liberty.”

“We are deeply touched by the Moultons’ letter and welcome the opportunity to makeover their RV,” said Mark Boggess, Camping World CEO. “This family is certainly very deserving and we know they will put their prize package to good use. We are thrilled to be able to help the Moultons to realize their travel dreams.”

The Moutons’ 1973 Timberline was made-over at the Rocklin, California Camping World Supercenter and was unveiled to them on Friday, August 5. The complete overhaul included a new air conditioner, tires, refrigerator, hot water heater, awning with screen room and other amenities. In addition, the winners received a free membership in the Camping World President’s Club.

“We’ve been going to Camping World since before there was a store in Rocklin,” stated Tom Moulton. “At that time, we would drive down to Fairfield. There really isn’t any place like it for RVs. They always have exactly what we need.”

Foster parents for 17 years, the Moultons currently have children aged 3- 22 in their home. When they are not home-schooling the group or leading their local Girl Scout troop, the Moultons enjoy traveling and average 2-3 trips per summer. The outdated refrigerator and lack of air conditioning have limited their trips thus far. With so much of the United States still to be experienced, the Moulton family is looking forward to their renovated RV and the limitless travel possibilities it will bring.

“We would like to thank Camping World for tons of great stuff, for great memories and greater possibilities,” the Moultons continued. “We can’t wait to show our children the marvelous places and sights throughout the United States.”
