Caribbean Carnival of Manchester
The Caribbean Carnival of Manchester is celebrating its third annual carnival on 19 and 20 August 2006 at Alexandra Park, Moss Side.
The theme of the carnival this year is "Street Bacchanal", a West Indian phrases meaning "everyone can join in".
On Saturday the carnival procession starts at 1pm with steel bands, floats with DJs playing music, mas bands, dance troupes with carnival queens and princesses.
The procession is followed by a party in Alexandra Park featuring a variety of performers: including international reggae superstar Peter Spence performing with the Ablewell Foundation, Level Crew (junior soca monarchs of Trinidad and Tobago) Scrappy and The Mighty Jamma give live performances (these three artists have between them won the national calypsonian soca artist competition seven times out of the last ten years). Film and TV star Chris Bisson, the carnival President, will make a guest appearance on stage.
Sunday''s carnival includes free Caribbean youth dance workshops in Alexandra Park with many young and up and coming musical talent. Sunday''s headline act is budding London artist Chantelle with her unique fusion of R&B soca. Sunday also presents a specially inclusive feature of the carnival - Stagefright - which is a chance for any young performer to come along and try out their stage skills in front of a live audience.
On both days there will be a variety of stalls selling delicious Caribbean hot food, ice cream, black cultural arts and crafts, jewellery, fashion, Caribbean cakes and sweets, charity stalls, an information tent, a funfair for the young at heart and much more!
All are welcome to enjoy the family fun.

"The Caribbean Carnival of Manchester is the biggest celebration of Caribbean Culture in the north west and a wonderful example of a fun community event. Manchester is very proud of its cultural diversity and the carnival gives local people and visitors the chance to join in the festival fun."
