Continental Airlines Applies to Begin Nonstop Flights From New York/Newark to Shanghai, China

HOUSTON, April 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL) announced today that it has formally submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for approval to operate nonstop flights from its hub at New York/Newark Liberty International Airport to Shanghai, China. If approved, Continental will introduce flights in March 2007 and will use the 283-seat (48 BusinessFirst, 235 economy) Boeing 777 aircraft. Continental will also offer online connecting service between Shanghai and points throughout the U.S., Europe and Latin America.

Continental announced last month that it will begin daily nonstop service from New York/Newark Liberty Airport to Beijing, China starting on June 15, 2005. Continental, which serves more airports than any other airline in the world, will be the only U.S. carrier offering daily nonstop service from New York to the People’s Republic of China. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Continental nonstop service from New York/Newark to Beijing saying, “The selection of Continental enables the U.S. to use its first opportunity to fill a critical service gap presented by the lack of U.S. carrier service to China from the U.S. east coast.”

Continental’s 2007 New York/Newark to Shanghai service will provide thousands of New York passengers with much faster and much more convenient air service between New York and Shanghai. Obtaining nonstop service from New York/Newark to Shanghai will enable Continental to provide service in the largest U.S. — China market which today lacks critical U.S. carrier nonstop service. Continental’s Shanghai flight will provide a competitive challenge to other Shanghai services and will encourage all carriers in the market to improve their customer service.

Continental already provides service from Liberty to Hong Kong, which at 8,060 miles, is one of the longest flights in the world.

Continental Airlines is the world’s sixth-largest airline with more than 3,000 daily departures throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.
