Tour de Six: 17 year-old High School Senior Embarks on Epic Journey
Seventeen year-old David E. Kunes from Victor, New York will be embarking on Sunday, August 20, 2006 on a cross-country bicycle tour of Historic US Route 6. The trip will take him through inner-cities, small towns and rural communities located along the Grand Old Highway.
Victor, NY (PRWEB) August 19, 2006 -- Imagine, just you on your bicycle cycling along one of America’s back roads. Sounds like a great Sunday afternoon. Imagine this trip is more than 3,000 miles. Now this trip sounds like an epic journey.
That’s exactly what 17 year-old David E. Kunes from Victor, New York will be embarking on Sunday, August 20, 2006. His destination is Long Beach, California via Historic US Route 6. The trip will take him through inner-cities, small towns and rural communities located along the Grand Old Highway. Russ Lombard, President/CEO of the US Route 6 Tourist Association says, “David’s journey will help raise awareness of the historic value of US 6 and the communities through which it runs.”
David plans to average roughly 80 miles per day on one of his Schwinn touring bicycles. “I started serious cycling in May of 2005. I bike around 150 to 200 miles on the weekends. Joe Pow, the father of one of my senior classmates (Victor High School), got me into a weekly bicycling group. I owe a lot both to him and the group.”
“Besides cycling, I have been in Scouting for the past twelve years and spend a lot of my time camping or volunteering in the community. Last year, I wrote for the school newspaper. I really enjoy reading and writing. I packed a notebook and I plan on taking lots of notes and pictures on the way across.”
“David is a great role model for kids and teenagers,” remarks Thomas Repp, Executive Editor of American Road magazine, and co-founder of the non-profit American Road Foundation. “He demonstrates a commitment to a number of good values: community, physical health and fitness, and cultural preservation. He is a great example that proves what we at American Road always say, ‘life can be more than just about getting to your destination—it’s about the journey.’”
