Second Local Lane and Two Ramps Open Today on Dan Ryan Expressway

CHICAGO, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is pleased to announce the opening today of a second local lane and two entrance and exit ramps on the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94). Heavy rain brought on by harsh thunderstorms in the early morning hours last week prevented work crews from opening the lane and ramps before the Fourth of July weekend. Later this month on the Dan Ryan, there will be additional ramp openings and closings as well as a lane reduction on South Wells Street.

IDOT's "Road Doctors" are announcing the following revised schedule of openings and closures:

-- Today, July 8th, a second local lane has been reopened on the outbound
Dan Ryan from 63rd to 71st Streets. Also, the entrance ramp from
67th Street to the outbound Dan Ryan and the exit ramp from the
outbound Dan Ryan to 71st Street were both reopened to traffic.

-- On July 25th (weather permitting), the exit ramp from the outbound Dan
Ryan to 63rd Street will close for reconstruction of the ramp. This
closure is expected to last until late September.

-- Later this summer, the entrance ramp from 71st Street to the inbound
Dan Ryan and the exit ramp from the inbound Dan Ryan to 67th Street
will reopen to traffic. Also, IDOT expects to reopen the 67th Street
Bridge at this time.

- The opening of the inbound exit ramp at 67th Street is
significant because it will allow inbound Dan Ryan traffic to
access the eastbound Chicago Skyway via State Street to
66th Street.

-- Work crews may be near the traffic lanes for the remainder of the
project. Drivers are urged to be extra cautious in the work zone where
the speed limit is 45 m.p.h. Furthermore, drivers should expect ongoing
shifts in traffic and should be prepared to stop.

This work is part of the $600 million Dan Ryan Expressway reconstruction project. IDOT is in the midst of a four-year reconstruction project on the Dan Ryan from 31st Street to 95th Street. The improved Dan Ryan will include an additional lane in each direction, a reconfigured Skyway interchange and upgrades to the local access roads that run parallel to the expressway. The project goals include improving safety for motorists, reducing commuting time on the city's busiest expressway and creating jobs.
