Detroit Zoo To Exclusively Display Smithsonian Institution Exhibit
Birds of South Asia: History Vs. Mystery on Exhibit Until January
ROYAL OAK, Mich., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning September 19, 2005, the Detroit Zoo will host Birds of South Asia: History Vs. Mystery, a fascinating art exhibit based on research performed for the most definitive field guide ever published on the winged wonders of the region. The Detroit Zoo has exclusive rights from the Smithsonian Institution to present the exhibit.
The exhibit delves into the Smithsonian Institution's massive avian research project, Birds of South Asia: The Ripley Guide, led by Pamela C. Rasmussen, Ph.D., Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals at the Michigan State University Museum. It features 25 bookplates that preview the recently published guide. The presentation demonstrates the different vocalizations of various birds of the region and explains how these sounds help ornithologists determine species. Sonograms (also known as audiospectographs) show the pitch, pattern, rhythm and tempo of vocalizations -- and let visitors create their own sounds! The exhibit also shows how researchers used specimen data to work out species' distributions and seasonality as well as establish a historical record -- in the process, uncovering and clarifying problems with misinformation, misidentification, and even fraud!
Birds of South Asia: History Vs. Mystery will be displayed at the Zoo's Exhibit Hall of the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery until January 19, 2006. It is open during Zoo hours every day and is free with the purchase of Zoo admission.
The Detroit Zoological Institute is comprised of the Detroit Zoo and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo. The Institute, founded in 1928, is committed to celebrating and saving wildlife.
