The Greenbrier Resort Celebrates 'The High Style of Dorothy Draper' Retrospective at The Museum of the City of New York
'What Coco Chanel was to fashion, Dorothy Draper was to decorating.' -Carleton Varney, Dorothy Draper's protege and President of The Draper Company, Inc.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.V., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Ms. Draper's 'Romance & Rhododendrons' renovation of The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, the single largest renovation ever at the property, included more than 45,000 yards of fabric and 15,000 rolls of wallpaper and was one of her single greatest design achievements. According to Carleton Varney, Draper's protege and President of The Dorothy Draper Company, Inc. "The Greenbrier is quintessential Draper, the most highly prized jewel in her crown." The resort remains the single greatest installation of her work.
As one of the first women to enter the male dominated interior design business, Dorothy Draper was a true pioneer in style. From 1925 to 1960, she dominated the interior design field, not only in New York but also nationally, and in 1960, was named the most influential tastemaker in America. Her influence extended beyond residential interiors, and she made her mark on big- city hotels, resorts, offices, department stores and apartment buildings.
Included in the Museum of the City of New York's Draper exhibition will be several never-before-exhibited pieces on loan from The Greenbrier resort, including a white, 19th century, Italian marble lamp with black shade, a wingback chair upholstered in Draper's classic green and white stripes and Draper's rare "dresk," her inventive combination dresser/vanity. The High Style of Dorothy Draper retrospective opens at The Museum of the City of New York on May 2, 2006 and runs through September. For more information, please visit http://www.mcny.org/.
To commemorate this event, The Greenbrier is offering two Dorothy Draper packages, available only in 2006. On September 22 - 24, "Get Draperized with Carleton Varney," or "Get Draperized" on your own anytime throughout the year.
