Family Fun Road Trip in Oregon

Summer’s not over yet! Here is a road trip idea that takes you from Milwaukie in the Portland Metro region, through Eugene and into Florence on the central Oregon coast for a weekend (or more) o’ family fun!

Start your adventure in Milwaukie at the North Clackamas Aquatic Park. Inside this giant kids’ water paradise is metro Portland’s only wave pool, a dive well, three awesome water slides, a lap pool and adults-only hot tub (for mom and dad). And if it’s not tooooo hot (or too cold) head outside for a game of sand volleyball, or to hang out on the sun deck.

The fun doesn’t stop once the snow melts on Mt. Hood. In fact, Mt. Hood SkiBowl (the nation’s largest night-skiing area) turns into a Summer Action Park with more than 20 mountain adventures, including the Northwest’s only half-mile, dual-alpine slide; Indy karts; guided horseback rides; bungee jumps; scenic sky-chair rides; mountain biking trails and more.

Day 3 takes you from Mt. Hood into Eugene in the Willamette Valley and onto the central Oregon coast. Located at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, Oregon’s third-largest city is ripe for family getaways.

Start your Eugene adventure at Science Factory Children’s Museum & Planetarium. Inside this candy-colored building you’ll find exhibits dedicated to scientific exploration and playful, hands-on learning. Check out the planetarium’s new show “Galaxies,” which explores earth’s place in the Milky Way, explains how the galaxies have changed over time—even what happens when galaxies collide.

Eugene to the Coast: After soaking in Eugene, head for the coast…the Sea Lion Caves in Florence to be exact! An elevator takes you down 208 feet into the world’s largest sea cave, located 11 miles north of the central coast town of Florence. This cave, which is as long as a football field and as tall as a 12-story building, is home to wild Steller sea lions—lots and lots of them!
