HULL, Mass., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- For people who would like to lose weight in the post holiday season, there is a new program called Fatpacking. Fatpacking escorts moderately overweight people (15-50 lbs.) on one and two week backpacking vacations that helps them alter their body composition.

Steve Silberberg, a 20 year veteran of backpacking, has organized a series of these trips in which he says participants eat all they want and still lose weight. Simultaneously, participants experience a rigorous but enjoyable wilderness adventure vacation. The upcoming series of backpacking trips (beginning Jan. 14th) are listed at http://www.fatpacking.com/.

"People can expect a noticeable change in body composition in as little as a week of hiking," says Silberberg, a computer programmer and MIT graduate. He began Fatpacking because of his passion for backpacking, its excellent health benefits, and the desire to share it with others. He would like participants to come away in better shape with a love of the wilderness and the desire to protect it.

On previous trips in the Great Smoky Mountains and on the Arizona Trail, participants lost an average of five pounds per person per week. Winter trips are scheduled on the Florida Trail near warm and sunny Orlando, Jan. 14-22, while it's freezing in many parts of the country. Subsequent trips are in Big Bend, TX Feb. 18-26, and in Arizona Mar 18 - Apr 2.

"My experience pushed me out of my perceived comfort zone and physical limitations," Val Parks, a former Fatpacking participant says. "I would definitely do it again!"

Participants are not restricted to any austere diet or eating plan as eating heartily is important in keeping your body at peak performance level for the rigors of backpacking. Significant weight loss still occurs even if hikers eat all they want.

"Backpackers also reap a host of ancillary exercise induced benefits," Silberberg says. "You can kick caffeine, stop smoking, reduce stress level, lower you blood pressure, and have a lot of fun."
