Jacksonville International Airport Now Offers Traveling Public Free, Wireless Internet Access

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 04/07/2006 -- The Jacksonville Aviation Authority today officially unveiled its wireless network at Jacksonville International Airport. Travelers with wireless-capable laptops can now access the Internet anywhere in the airport free of charge.
The system, designed, installed and serviced by IBM, will be operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The JIA's free, public Wi Fi -- or wireless fidelity -- system is among the most extensive in Jacksonville. The network is capable of handling as many as 300 users at the same time.
Wi Fi is a technology that lets computer users log onto high-speed networks without physically plugging the laptop into a network. Many of today's laptop computers have wireless capability built in, and older laptops can take advantage of this technology through a computer card.
"JAA Executive Director John Clark charged us with building an excellent wireless system that we could offer to the traveling public at no charge," said Richard Stroup, JAA Director of Information Technology. "I think our airport customers will find this enhanced service a valuable addition at JIA."
JIA joins the growing ranks of U.S. airports that provide wireless Internet access. Among the nation's top 50 airports, 19 now offer wireless connection.
"We have made this investment in new technology to meet the demands of our customers," said Michael Stewart, JAA director of External Affairs. "By offering wireless connection, we can help improve the productivity of our business travelers."
The Jacksonville Aviation Authority was established in 2001 by the Florida legislature to operate Jacksonville International Airport and the city's three general aviation airports -- Craig, Herlong and Cecil Field. The authority is governed by a seven-member board. Jacksonville International Airport -- funded through user fees and not local taxes -- serves nearly six million passengers annually.
