Orbitz Staff Insider Picks

The abundance of available Halloween activities makes it challenging to sift through all of the destinations offering ghoulish getaways. To ensure your trip is filled with treats and not tricks, the Orbitz Insiders have highlighted Halloween destinations that are not to be missed.

Hudson River Valley, NY

The historic Hudson River Valley area, home of Sleepy Hollow, has many spooktacular events throughout October. Visit the Van Cortlandt Manor for their Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze, which occurs every weekend night. The Manor runs along an 18th century riverscape and features 3,000 Jack O’ Lanterns, all hand-carved and illuminated. For a spooky but historical trip, visit the Old Dutch Church, which offers an annual reading of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Afterwards, be sure to see the grave of Washington Irving, author of the tale. If books and graveyards aren’t spooky enough, thrill-seeking vacationers can head over to Philipsburg Manor; here the brave can wander at will and see ghouls, ghosts and even the headless horseman himself during the annual Legends Weekend!

San Diego, CA

Known for blue skies and wonderful weather, October showcases a darker side of San Diego. Enjoy the warm fall weather with great costumes, food and music at the Gaslamp Quarter “Monster Bash” block party. For ambitious costume creators, enter the best costume contest for a large cash prize! For the traveler looking to come face-to-face with scary apparitions, visit the Whaley House. Long touted as one of the most haunted homes in America, a tour through this museum may reveal more than just history. For a screaming good time, check out the Haunted Hotel and Haunted Trail of Balboa Park. Please note that both of these attractions are not recommended for young children.

Savannah, GA

Known by some as the most haunted city in America, Savannah offers travelers a true ghostly experience during Halloween. There are several companies in town which offer guided walking tours through real life haunted houses. Hear the stories of the ghosts that refuse to leave these antiquated houses and be sure to have a camera ready in the event a ghost decides to join the tour. For vacationers who prefer a more kid-friendly Halloween event, visit the Oatland Island Education Center, Savannah’s Zoo located just outside of the city. There, vacationers can enjoy some local wildlife and participate in the annual Halloween Hike for kids, candy bags provided!

San Francisco, CA

Want to attend a Halloween party with 200,000 of your closest friends? If so, Halloween in the Castro is the place for you. The Castro in San Francisco hosts an annual Halloween party featuring the March of Light Halloween Parade. The parade invites a myriad of performers to join the festivities, featuring a dynamic celebration of artistic expression. For travelers seeking Halloween activities for the little witches and warlocks in the group, San Francisco’s PIER 39 will host Pumpkin Pandemonium on October 29, which includes a dance party, costume contest and trick-or-treating at participating pier merchants.

Theme Park Halloween Events

Embracing the Halloween spirit, theme parks around the U.S. are offering spooky events for both families and adults. At the Magic Kingdom(R) Park within Walt Disney World, Disney is hosting Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. This family event, held after regular theme park hours, features Mickey’s “Boo-to-You” Parade and Happy HalloWishes fireworks spectacular. A “Brick-or-Treat” family event is also being held at LEGOLAND(R) California October 21-22, 28-29, including costume contests and the enchanting Brick-or- Treat trail. For individuals seeking both family and adult Halloween thrills, Six Flags is hosting Fright Fest. During weekends in October, Six Flags parks have family Halloween spooks during the day, and as night falls, more extreme scares are in store.
