Boingo Adds Airports in Denmark, The Netherlands and Norway to Worldwide Roaming Network
Additions Mean Users Now Have High-Speed Wireless Internet Access at 169 Airports Worldwide
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Boingo Wireless today announced the addition of six airports in The Netherlands and in key Scandinavian cities to the Boingo(R) Roaming System network, giving subscribers in these European locations access to fast, wireless Internet access. The locations added to the network are Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Copenhagen Airport, Oslo Airport and airports in the Norwegian cities of Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim.
The addition of these locations brings the total number of European airports in the Boingo Roaming System to 39, including airports in Paris; Hannover, Germany; Athens, Greece; Birmingham, UK and Cuneo, Italy. These locations anchor a network of nearly 10,500 hot spots in 20 European countries in convenient locations such as hotels, cafes, convention centers and office buildings.
"With an estimated 80 percent of today's Wi-Fi usage occurring at airports, it's easy to see that expanding our roaming services to these key business travel centers is important to our strategy," said Colby Goff, senior vice president of network strategy for Boingo.
At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Boingo's network services are deployed in conjunction with Attingo NL, the operator of all public Internet and business services at the airport. Schiphol is a multi-modal hub for air, rail and road transport that serves more than 40 million passengers per year.
Copenhagen Airport serves nearly 20 million passengers annually and is Scandinavia's main airport. Copenhagen Airport is the hub for SAS and for the Star Alliance, a network of 16 international airlines that fly to a total of 795 airports in 139 countries.
For the Norwegian airports, Boingo is working with Oslo Lufthavn Tele & Data AS, which operates airport-wide "IP-zones" for wireless Internet access in airports nationwide. Close to 15 million passengers traveled through Oslo Airport in 2004, which was the first year that international traffic exceeded domestic at the airport. Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim international airports serve Norway's other large cities and carry more than 9 million passengers per year combined.
Boingo gives business travelers the best choice of Wi-Fi hot spots by combining the locations of 95 leading Wi-Fi operators into one worldwide network, and allowing the user to roam onto any of these locations with a single subscription using Boingo's free Wi-Fi client software.
Boingo also partners with service providers to allow their users to access these hot spots through its Boingo Platform Services program. The program provides partners with a full suite of back-office billing, roaming, mediation and clearinghouse services to allow them to offer their own Wi-Fi service quickly and cost effectively. To date, the company has announced Platform Services partnerships with BT Infonet, Earthlink, Fiberlink, Nextel Communications, MCI, and Telecom Italia.
