Ivory Coast: Foreign Office Amends Travel Advice

The Foreign Office today revised its travel advice for Ivory Coast. We
continue to advise against all travel to Ivory Coast. Additionally, we are now advising British nationals already in the country to leave when they judge they are able to do so safely.
The travel advice summary now reads:
"We continue to advise against all travel to Ivory Coast. We advise British Nationals who are already in the country to leave Ivory Coast when they judge they are able to do so safely.
"Violent demonstrations have taken place since 16 January and the situation remains very fragile, with the risk of further deterioration at any moment. There is potential for more unrest, with implications for continued law and order, throughout Abidjan and in towns in the west of the country.
"If against our advice you decide to travel to Ivory Coast, you should take strong security precautions and register with the British High Commission in Accra or our local warden network in Abidjan. Events can move fast and violence could erupt at short notice.
"Operations at the British Embassy in Abidjan were suspended on 1 April
2005. The UK government does not offer formal consular protection in the
Ivory Coast. Only very limited consular assistance can be provided from Accra."
