Island Treasures Hidden On Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, Ga. (December 5, 2006) – During the months of January and February, visitors to Jekyll Island seeking treasures by the sea may take home more than island shells. Jekyll Island's popular "Island Treasures” promotion is returning, offering treasure seekers the opportunity to find beautifully crafted, limited-edition glass floats. The Island Treasures, created in the likeness of floats used for centuries by fishermen in Europe and Asia, are placed in limited numbers along the beach for visitors to find and keep. It's a 'surprise and delight' treat started by the Jekyll Island Authority in 2002, and it instantly became a hit.

"What began as an idea to provide guests with something unexpected has evolved into a new tradition,” says Eric Garvey, senior director of marketing for Jekyll Island. "Our guests are so active in their participation that it has become more and more difficult to hide the treasures!”

The Island Treasures are one-of-a-kind pieces commissioned from highly skilled artisans from throughout the United States. Among the artists contributing their talents:

• Claude Kurtz, Fernhill Glass Studio, Troutdale, Oregon
• Treasure Collupy, Treasure'd Glass, Skamokawa, Washington
• Dennis Schmitz, Pyromania Glass Studio & Gallery, Newport Oregon
• Mark Ellinger, Glass Quest, Stanwood, Washington

The Island Treasures collection features brilliantly colored fishing floats, magical starfish, beautiful sand dollars and other exceptional pieces. Each piece is numbered and signed by the artist who created it.

Guests who find the Island Treasures are asked to register their find at the Jekyll Island Welcome Center to receive a certificate of authenticity, artist bio and an embroidered gift bag. As added incentive to register their find, all those who register their Island Treasure are automatically entered to win a special, one-of-a-kind glass creation by artist Mark Ellinger.
