FINNAIR, JAPAN AIRLINES FORM CODESHARE ARRANGEMENT

TOKYO – Finnair and Japan Airlines (JAL), which is currently seeking oneworld membership, have agreed to enter into a codesharing tie-up on JAL’s domestic routes in Japan and on Finnair’s European routes starting this December. Finnair’s code will be added to JAL’s routes between Osaka and Sapporo, from Fukuoka to Osaka and Tokyo as well as from Tokyo’s Haneda airport to Osaka. All these flights have connections to Finnair’s routes between Osaka and Helsinki and Tokyo and Helsinki. JAL’s codes in turn will be added to Finnair’s Helsinki-Amsterdam return and Helsinki-Frankfurt return routes. JAL will sell these flights as connections to its own Tokyo-Amsterdam and Tokyo-Frankfurt flights.

AUSTRALIA’S NEW BUSINESS CLASS AIRLINE TAKES TO THE SKIES

MELBOURNE – Australia’s new business class airline, OzJet, took to the skies early this week on its first flight, from Melbourne to Sydney. OzJet will operate eight flights a day in each direction between Sydney and Melbourne from Monday to Friday. A further 14 flights – seven in each direction – are scheduled for weekends. OzJet’s normal fully-flexible fare will be A$325 one-way and A$650 return. Passengers can check in 15 minutes before the flight on a 60-seat plane – a reconfigured Boeing 737. OzJet’s carry-on luggage policy – with a capacity of 20kg – is designed to accommodate everything needed for an interstate stopover.

AUSTRALIAN AIRLINES BOOSTS FLIGHTS, CAPACITY ON TOKYO, CAIRNS ROUTE

CAIRNS – Australian Airlines is to commence double daily services between Tokyo and Cairns from mid-2006, as Qantas withdraws from the route. As a result of these changes, the Qantas Group will offer more than 500 additional seats each week between Tokyo and Cairns. With 14 weekly services between Tokyo and Cairns, Australian Airlines will offer almost double its current number of services between Japan and Australia. It is planned that the existing codeshare arrangement with Japan Airlines on Qantas-operated services between Cairns and Tokyo will continue uninterrupted when Australian Airlines commences operating on the route mid-2006.

FINNAIR TO COMMENCE DELHI, HELSINKI DIRECT SERVICE

NEW DELHI – Finnair is to launch scheduled nonstop flights between the Indian capital of Delhi and the Finnish capital of Helsinki in November 2006. Flight time from Helsinki to Delhi is 6 hours and 35 minutes. The inaugural flight to Delhi will be on Wednesday 1 November 2006. The route will be operated initially three times a week with Finnair’s Boeing MD-11 fleet. The other departure days from Helsinki are Monday and Friday. From India, the route will be operated on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

AUSTRALIAN AIRLINES TO INTRODUCE PREMIUM ECONOMY CABIN

CAIRNS – Australian Airlines is to launch a Premium Economy cabin from mid-2006. The airline currently offers an all-Economy cabin of 271 seats, which will be reconfigured as 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy seats. The main features of Australian Airlines Premium Economy product would include more spacious seating, priority boarding and priority meal service.

ABU DHABI – Etihad Airways is to launch new services between Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg today (Thursday). Etihad flight EY603 will fly from Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg at 0045 hours every Thursday and Saturday, with the return flight, EY604, leaving Johannesburg at 0950 hours on the same day.

QATAR AIRWAYS INCREASES SERVICES ON BEIJING ROUTE

DOHA – Qatar Airways is celebrating the first anniversary of its Beijing service by increasing frequency on the route. An extra scheduled flight is now operating between Doha and Beijing, taking capacity up from three to four non-stop flights a week. The new service QR898 departs Doha on Monday evening at 2305, arriving in the Chinese capital at 1215. The return flight QR899 leaves Beijing on Tuesday afternoon at 1610, arriving in Doha at 2045 the same day. The airline is also planning to increase frequency to Shanghai in the New Year, and from March 26 next year, the airline will launch daily scheduled flights between Doha and Hong Kong.

HILTON BEIJING UNDERGOES RENOVATION

BEIJING – Hilton Beijing is totally remodeling itself over the coming months. The first phase of the renovation saw the existing 375 guest rooms receive a facelift, and the introduction of high-speed Internet access and plasma screen TVs in all guest rooms, as well as Bose sound systems, individual espresso machines, personal home office systems and LCD TV screens in the bathrooms of executive floor rooms and suites. An additional 125 executive suites, one additional ballroom and several meeting rooms incorporating extra executive facilities and full Hilton Meeting services will be added to Hilton Beijing in an adjoining building.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES TO RETURN TO PAKISTAN

SINGAPORE – Singapore Airlines is to restart a three-times-weekly service to the cities of Karachi and Lahore, in Pakistan, from 1 February 2006. Flights will depart Singapore on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday of each week, at 1535 hours and operate a circular routing to both Karachi and Lahore.

AIR TAHITI NUI, VIRGIN ATLANTIC JOIN FORCES

SYDNEY – Travellers from Australia to London can now stop over in tropical Tahiti, thanks to a new partnership between Air Tahiti Nui and Virgin Atlantic Airways. The arrangement between the airlines effectively creates a new round-the-world itinerary. Air Tahiti Nui flies from Sydney to Tahiti, with onward services to New York City and to Paris via Los Angeles. Virgin Atlantic’s network includes flights from Los Angeles and New York to London Heathrow, and from Sydney to London, via Hong Kong.

JAPAN AIRLINES TO TEMPORARILY RESUME FLIGHTS TO INDONESIA

TOKYO – JAL is to temporarily resume normal international flight services between Japan and Indonesia over the New Year vacation period. Over the New Year vacation period, JAL will resume full operation of the three daily direct services it normally offers passengers between Japan and Indonesia. From December 22, 2005 to January 9, 2006, passengers will be able to travel daily from Tokyo (Narita) to either Denpasar (Bali) or Jakarta direct. Daily service between Osaka (Kansai) and Denpasar will once again be available from December 27 to January 4.

JIA SHANGHAI HOTEL TO OPEN NEXT YEAR

SHANGHAI – Shanghai is to get a new boutique hotel, JIA Shanghai, in mid-2006, two years after the launch of JIA Hong Kong. Located on Nanjing Road and Taixing Raod, the new 60-room JIA Shanghai will feature an executive floor of accommodation on the top floor with special facilities for travellers. Two penthouse suites are also located on this floor, each with designed interconnecting functions to adjacent rooms to form larger 200 sq. metre suites. Guest rooms will average 45 sq metres and will provide the latest in-room communication and entertainment technology.
