International Passenger Traffic Breaks Record at 13.4 Million

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 10/27/2005 -- Led by continued record international volumes, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) reported an overall 5 percent increase in September 2005 compared to the same month last year.

LAX international airlines served 1,393,980 passengers for the month, up 7.9 percent from 1,291,671 served in September 2004. Domestic traffic was up 3.9 percent to 3,508,565 from the same month last year.

For the first nine months of 2005, international passenger traffic was up 7.6 percent to a record 13,402,767 from 12,452,356 for the same period one year ago. The previous record for international traffic at LAX for the first nine months of a calendar year was 13,222,762 in 2000.

Domestic traffic in the January through September period was virtually flat at 33,340,886 passengers. Overall, LAX served 46,743,653 passengers in the first nine months of 2005, up 1.9 percent from 45,879,006 during the same period of 2004.

Airport officials attribute the below forecast domestic volumes to airlines trimming their flight schedules in the face of record jet fuel prices. LAX expects to end 2005 at 62 million annual travelers.

Air freight handled at LAX for the first nine months of 2005 is up 2.1 percent to 1,508,730 tons.

At Ontario International Airport (ONT), passenger traffic was up 7.9 percent in September compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date, ONT traffic is up 3.6 percent to 5,422,124 passengers. Airport officials forecast ONT to exceed 7 million passengers for 2005 -- a record for that airport.

ONT air freight for 2005 totaled 418,909 through September, down 6.8 percent from the same period last year.

LAWA is a City of Los Angeles department that owns and operates four airports: LAX, ONT, Van Nuys (general aviation) and Palmdale Regional (PMD).
