Lovelock Invites Visitors to 'Lock Their Love'

LOVELOCK, Nev., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Don't let love pass you by. Billboards on either side of the small rural town of Lovelock, Nev., pose this challenge to travelers on Interstate 80 in Northern Nevada and beckon them to exit and declare their love with a "lovers lock."

The tradition of the lovers lock began many years ago high in the Yellow Mountains of China. Legend says that couples must trek to the mountains and affix a lock to a chain and throw the key into the abyss. Their love will last as long as the lock remains on the chain.

Over the years the lock-laden chains have grown and spread throughout the mountains and along the Great Wall. There are a few places elsewhere in the world where the custom has caught on, and now Lovelock brings the tradition to the United States with its Lovers Lock Plaza in the Pershing County Courthouse Park.

Visitors can bring their own lock or use a heart-shaped lock available in Lovelock free of charge. They then add it to chains at the Lovers Lock Plaza. A sign at the plaza tells the story of the lovers lock while cards ask couples to share their love story, which will then be posted on the Lovers Lock Web site.

Lovelock officials have chosen Valentine's Day to dedicate the plaza, and Nevada Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt and her fiance, Las Vegas entertainer Dennis Bono, will add their own lock to the chain, publicly anchoring their love for eternity. Residents and visitors are invited to join state and local officials in celebrating Valentine's Day by locking their love.

While in Lovelock, travelers can visit the Pershing County Courthouse, one of only two round courthouses still in use in the United States; fish, camp or water ski at Rye Patch Reservoir; see Mark Twain's old mining cabin in the nearby historic town of Unionville; and explore the 2,000-year-old Lovelock Indian Cave where archeologists have found mummified remains, ancient duck decoys, baskets and hunting tools.
