McMinnville a Great Destination for Memorial Day Weekend Wine Tasting

MCMINNVILLE, Ore., May 5 /PRNewswire/ — Historic McMinnville is a destination in its own right, but it’s also a great jump-off point for visiting several of Oregon’s best wineries. Over Memorial Day Weekend, when even Oregon’s smallest wine producers are open to welcome visitors, McMinnville makes a perfect weekend getaway. What McMinnville’s urban wineries may not have in terms of views, vineyards and vistas, they make up for in the warmth of their reception, lack of pretension and sense of family in a shared community. “One thing we all share,” comments Westrey Wine Company Winemaker Amy Wesselman, “is an emphasis of quality in the bottle over glamour in the showplace.”

McMinnville is in the heart of Oregon wine country, halfway between Portland and Salem on Highway 99 West. Home to the world-renowned International Pinot Noir Celebration, it is possible that more French and New Zealand Pinot fans know of this little country town than Oregon’s city residents.

Committed to responsible consumption, wineries organized a convenient shuttle, the “Vino Van,” between wineries, accommodations and restaurants. The shuttle will offer wine storage while riders continue their tasting. Organizers hope visitors will stay the weekend, rather than fighting traffic after a long day of tasting. Kids will find plenty to do at a variety of parks, an excellent swim/recreation center and the Evergreen Aviation Museum.

A variety of accommodations and retail shops are all within walking distance of most of the town’s wineries. Great restaurants abound, including Nick’s Italian Cafe, La Rambla and Bistro Maison to name a few.
