Many Island Visitors prefer Off-Peak Travel

PUT-IN-BAY and SOUTH BASS ISLAND, Ohio, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- As the sun sets on an intense summer, the changing seasons bring a renewed interest in the Ohio Islands. The days are crisp and the island rhythm is relaxed and casual. Many hotels, cottages, state park campgrounds and bed and breakfasts welcome lodgers, while many accommodations offer autumn discounts.

September and October bring some of the region's most unique and interesting events, including the Miller Boat Line 5K (September 24) -- one of the Midwest's only island 5K races, and the Put-in-Bay Wine Festival (October 8). The festival is a great celebration featuring more than 200 exquisite varieties of wine offered by wineries from around the world. Visitors can also experience the Heineman's Winery harvest, where workers hand-pick bushels of grapes for award-winning wines and juices. Often dubbed Lake Erie's "Wine Islands," South Bass and Middle Bass Islands are easily accessible via Miller Ferry for romantic weekend getaways or last-minute trips.

Another popular event is the Fall Bay Regatta (Oct. 8-9) -- an annual sailing race that is simply stunning to watch. The regatta is now in its 25th year. Oktoberfest on the Island (Oct. 15-16) is yet another event many visitors enjoy, offering authentic German foods, drinks and desserts.

"Visitors tell us that coming to Lake Erie in the fall is like a 'last hurrah' for the vacation season," said Miller Boat Line owner Bill Market. "It's the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun's last rays before colder weather sets in."

The year 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of the Miller Boat Line on Lake Erie -- an important milestone for the region on the northern shores of Ohio. What began as a humble fishing charter and ice-harvesting business, Miller Boat Line has evolved into not only a ferry line for passengers, cars and freight, but also a way of life for anyone who chooses island living.
