Naterra Land Launches Voyageurs Retreat at Giants Ridge Vacation Homesites

Land on Eastern Shores of Wynne Lake Offers Seclusion and Access to Recreation

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ — Hidden gems that provide a peaceful getaway where families can connect with nature aren’t easy to find these days. A hidden gem that remains largely unchanged from the days of the voyageurs and that is just minutes away from the region’s best golf and ski destinations can only be found at Naterra Land’s new Voyageurs Retreat at Giants Ridge.

Located just outside of Biwabik, Minn., and across the water from the popular Giants Ridge recreation area, Voyageurs Retreat will consist of wooded lakeside, lake access and lake view homesites along the eastern shores of Wynne Lake.

The first two settlements at Voyageurs Retreat, “The Plateau” and “The Birch Bark,” consist of 39 homesites and launched on August 5. Additional vacation homesites will be phased in over the next few years. Each site will have municipal water and sewer instead of traditional wells and septic tanks, making year-round maintenance easy and helping protect the pristine lakes. Sites will also be wired for high-speed Internet access.

“There really isn’t a place quite like the Giants Ridge area,” said Paul Essler, Naterra Land’s executive vice president. “Wynne Lake has the look and feel of the Boundary Waters, and it really takes you back to the days when the voyageurs paddled through these same waters 350 years ago. In such a serene setting it’s easy to forget that you’re just minutes from some absolutely world-class attractions like The Quarry and The Legend golf courses and some of Minnesota’s best skiing. And all of it is only three hours from the Twin Cities.”

Whether along the sandy shoals of the glacier-carved shoreline or on a plateau high above the rocky crags of Wynne Lake, all the residents of Voyageurs Retreat will have lake access. Carefully designed green spaces averaging 125-150 feet in shoreline will be strategically spaced along the shoreline and offer inland residents access to the lake.

In addition to these open spaces, Voyageurs Retreat will have nearly seven miles of its own hiking and biking trails complete with maps and interpretive information. The paved Mesabi Bike Trail, which when completed will traverse 132 miles and connect more than 25 communities as it treks from Grand Rapids to Ely, will wind through a portion of Voyageurs Retreat. A bridge across a section of Wynne Lake called “The Narrows” will provide residents easy access to the western shore of the lake and Giants Ridge by foot, bicycle or golf cart.

Voyageurs Retreat the Result of Naterra Land’s Strong Reputation

Naterra Land is no stranger to the Giants Ridge area. The company acquired property from the Iron Range Resources in 1990 and developed the Villas at Giants Ridge. It was the quality, follow-through and environmental stewardship the company demonstrated on that project that made Naterra the developer of choice when Minnesota Power, a division of ALLETE, looked to sell its nearly 2,000 acres along the eastern shores of Wynne Lake.

“Naterra Land’s environmentally conscientious reputation is unrivaled,” said Mike Gentile, development director for Giants Ridge. “We are thrilled to be working with Phil Taylor [Naterra's founder and president] again, and believe this project can help Giants Ridge reach the critical mass it needs to move forward.”

To preserve the beauty of Voyageurs Retreat, Naterra Land has established protective environmental covenants to safeguard the lake and land. Naterra Land will require extended setbacks from the lake on all parcels, limit the removal of trees to only what’s necessary for the construction of a home, and place restrictions on the types of structures that can be built.

Lake access and lake view properties will start in the $60,000s. Shoreline homesites, which range from 125-250 feet of frontage, will begin in the $160,000s.
