New Discoveries in Oaxaca Archaeology

The modern-day Mexican state of Oaxaca contains one of the richest archaeological zones in the world. Prior to 1200 B.C., amid mountainous highlands and arid valleys, ancient villagers developed some of the first complex societies in Mesoamerica—especially the well-known Zapotec and Mixtec civilizations.

Throughout Oaxaca, massive ruins, ball courts, sculptural friezes, and evidence of the Western hemisphere’s earliest writing stand as testimony to Zapotec and Mixtec creativity and power. Archaeologists have long believed that the Zapotecs, based in their capital city of Monte Albán, dominated ancient Oaxaca’s political landscape. Recently, however, researchers are questioning the geographic extent of Zapotec control.

Through extensive fieldwork and cutting-edge techniques, Dr. Jeffrey Blomster is exploring the emergence of social complexity in Oaxaca and the expansion of the Zapotec state. Join Jeff for a unique archaeological adventure to two locales of purported Zapotec imperialism: the highland Mixteca Alta and the lowland Rio Verde area along the Pacific coast.

By investigating architecture, artifacts, and art at remote sites, we examine the limits of empire and are among the first to learn of recent discoveries and controversial theories.

Although this trip was designed for participants already familiar with Oaxaca archaeology, Crow Canyon welcomes first-time visitors. We offer an optional, pre-trip extension to Oaxaca City and nearby sites and artisan villages during
the fascinating Day of the Dead festivities.
