GREEN, Ohio, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The customer experience at Akron- Canton (CAK) just keeps getting better and better. Even shorter lines, more space and friendly service are a few features of the new gate screening area that opened this morning. The new area will be home to three (expanded from two) passenger screening lanes operated, staffed and controlled by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

TSA federal security director Michael Young says "this checkpoint expansion project is another example of our ongoing commitment to and partnership with the leadership at Akron-Canton Airport. This expanded checkpoint will support the continued growth demonstrated at this airport and facilitate an efficient, timely and safe customer travel experience."

"This is a great day for passengers flying CAK," continues airport director Fred Krum. "We need to keep one step ahead of our explosive traffic growth. We would not have this new screening operation without the support and leadership of Mike Young and his very capable team. We deeply appreciate their dedication to passenger safety and customer service."

The timing for the new gate screening area is perfect because Frontier Airlines will commence service to Denver on June 15, 2005 and the airport's largest carrier AirTran Airways continues to attract more passengers from throughout Northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Additionally, US Airways Express (which recently enhanced service to Philadelphia and Charlotte), Delta Connection, United Express, and Northwest Airlink offer flights to their hubs across the United States.

The airport is currently in the third phase of the $60 million, five-year STAR expansion project, featuring a $24 million gate replacement and a new Shuffel Road interchange. The first two phases included longer runways, a new baggage claim wing, additional car parking and a food court with national brands.
