Bartender Charles Portera of The Court of Two Sisters Mixes Winning Drink in Competition

NEW ORLEANS, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Comfort's Tales of the Cocktail, an annual event celebrating the history of the cocktail in New Orleans, announces the "Southern Orleans" as the official cocktail of the event, which takes place August 18-20, 2005. The "Southern Orleans" will be served throughout the event beginning at the kick-off on August 18, at the Hotel Monteleone.

Local bartenders participated in a cocktail mixing competition in May to determine the signature cocktail for the annual Tales of the Cocktail. Fourteen bartenders mixed cocktails from their own recipes with the common ingredient being Southern Comfort. Judges for the competition included Kerri McCaffety, author of Obituary Cocktail and Lou Giglio, New Orleans brand ambassador for Southern Comfort. The cocktails were judged on taste profile, creativity and mixability.

Three bartenders were awarded for their cocktails. In first place was Charles Portera of The Court of Two Sisters. His drink, the "Southern Orleans" included 1 oz. Southern Comfort, 2/3 oz. Lemon sour mix, 2/3 oz. Korbel champagne and 1/4 oz. grenadine. The Southern Comfort, sour mix and champagne is shaken with ice and poured over the sugar cube into a cocktail glass. The grenadine is added on top and garnished with a lime wheel.

"Charles' ingredients made excellent use of the full Southern Comfort flavor wheel," praised judge Lou Giglio. "All of the bartenders showed creativity and produced fantastic drinks, but the Southern Orleans offered a pleasant and unique taste."

In second place came Jonathan Emerson of La Louisiane with the "Southern Comfort Peach Mint Tea," and in third place, was Brandi Brignac of Belli Baci (the new bar at Cafe Giovanni) with the "Southern Comfort Big Easy Iced Tea." Marvin Allen with the Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone received honorable mention with the "Blushing Southern Belle." In the city known worldwide for its attention to cuisine, cocktails and unique culture, Southern Comfort presents the third annual Tales of the Cocktail, a three-day event celebrating dining, drinking and the history of the cocktail, on August 18-20, 2005, at various locations in the New Orleans French Quarter.
