REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Did you know that you can tour wine country -- right here in Ohio?

Ohio is home to more than 60 wineries, and there is no better time than June -- Ohio Wine Month -- to visit a winery or two to learn about Ohio's wine industry while trying Ohio's quality wines. More than 75 percent of Ohio wineries are small family farms that make handcrafted, small-batch wines. These small wineries create the perfect environment for wine novices to taste and learn and for wine enthusiasts to have a personal experience with the wine and winemakers.

"There is a quality Ohio wine for everyone -- whether you like to enjoy a glass with fine cheese or have a glass with take-out pizza," said Michelle "Mike" Widner, Program Manager, Ohio Grape Industries Committee. "People tend to get very intimidated about which wine to serve with which types of food, but the only wrong wine choice is no wine at all!"

During Ohio Wine Month, the Ohio Grape Industries Committee recognizes quality Ohio wines with Director's Choice Awards, chosen by Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Fred Dailey, and People's Choice Awards, chosen by representatives and friends of Ohio's wine industry. These award-winning wines are a great starting point for Ohioans to learn more about their home state's wine offerings.

This year's Director's Choice Award winners included:

Red Debonne Vineyards 2003 Chambourcin Debonne Vineyards, Madison

White Debonne Vineyards 2004 Vidal Blanc Debonne Vineyards, Madison
(tie) Firelands 2004 Pinot Grigio Firelands Winery, Sandusky

Dessert St. Joseph Vineyard 2003 St. Joseph Vineyard, Thompson
Cabernet Franc Ice Wine

This year's People's Choice Award winners included:

Red St. Joseph Pinot Noir St. Joseph Vineyard, Thompson

White Ferrante Cabernet Franc Ferrante Winery and Ristorante,
Blush Geneva
(tie) Firelands Pinot Grigio Firelands Winery, Sandusky

Dessert Stoney Ridge Blackberry Rage Stoney Ridge Winery, Bryan

The Ohio Grape Industries Committee, established in 1981, maintains and creates viable, income-producing grape enterprises in the state of Ohio. Through promotion, marketing, and research the agency is committed to expanding markets for Ohio grapes and grape products.
