Old Mondoro- The Authentic Remote Safari
LOWER ZAMBEZI, ZAMBIA (11/06) – Imagine sleeping in a tent in a remote wilderness with nothing between you and the great outdoors but canvas and natural materials from the area. Where paraffin lanterns light your way and the soft background hum of Africa is a true surround sound. Where delicious meals are prepared in a bush kitchen with bread baked in a homemade oven. You’re at Old Mondoro Camp in the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia, where safari-ites get an authentic safari that concentrates on wildlife and bush – the way safaris used to be.
Here, it’s as close to the natural world as you can get. Martial eagles, water monitors, African wildcat, Sharpe’s greysbok, buffalo herds, leopard, and wild dog are all part of the possible spectacular sightings in this area. Old Mondoro expert guides, known to be among Africa’s most knowledgeable, ensure a fascinating, memorable experience.
The Camp, owned jointly by Chiawa Camp and Sausage Tree Camp, is set in a grove of acacia trees on the banks of the Zambezi River, a region characterized by vast flood plains and open woodland, providing ideal game viewing opportunities. It is unquestionably the best walking area in the Lower Zambezi. Game drives in a vehicle are also offered both day and night or by motor boat during the day.
The tents, resting on temporary slabs, feature ensuite facilities with flush toilets, and canvas bucket showers and wash basins. Beds in the tents have thick, comfortable mattresses and large mosquito netting. Throughout the day, the tents, which accommodate only eight guests, are open so while resting or reading, the outstanding views of the mighty river may be enjoyed. At night, blinds with windows are lowered for privacy and security. Dinner is served in the main tent, under a winter thorn tree and next to a sausage tree, overlooking the Zambezi River.
If you’re going to Old Mondoro, it is recommended that you combine your visit with one to Chiawa Camp or Sausage Tree Camp, more sophisticated, luxurious camps, upstream from Old Mondoro. You may even take a canoe trip between the three camps to see wildlife from another perspective. A week here will give you full appreciation for the spectacle of this part of the world.
Rates are $595 per person per night from May 1 to Oct. 31, 2007. They include accommodation, meals, drinks, guided game viewing, park entry fees, transfers between Old Mondoro and Chiawa Camps and the airstrip, canoe trips, laundry, bar and government taxes. Old Mondoro is also available for private use.
