Parade to Kick Off 2005 Little League World Series and Draw Visitors to Downtown Williamsport

HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell will serve as Honorary Grand Marshal at the first-ever Williamsport Grand Slam Parade. The parade serves as a kick-off to one of Pennsylvania's greatest iconic events, the Little League World Series, held each year in South Williamsport. The parade will honor the unique heritage and culture of the region and is expected to draw more than 10,000 people who attend the series to downtown Williamsport.

"The Williamsport Grand Slam Parade will feature the best of Pennsylvania and will provide a tremendous boost to both the local economy of Williamsport and tourism in the region for years to come," Governor Rendell said. "This is an opportunity for the local region and the commonwealth to showcase its many family-oriented attractions."

The inaugural parade will feature the Governor, along with Little League players from across the world, the famous Williamsport Marching Millionaires Band, the Pennsylvania National Guard Honor Guard and several other notable local organizations. The parade will conclude in a festival and fireworks display.

Governor Rendell presented Williamsport Mayor, Mary Wolf and Jason Fink, executive vice president of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the Lycoming County Convention and Visitors Bureau, with a $40,000 grant last month to provide financial support to help generate economic activity in downtown Williamsport during the 10-day period when attention from across the world is focused on Little League and the Williamsport area.

"For a long time, we've been working toward the goal of getting Little League World Series visitors out of the stadium and into the streets of downtown Williamsport," Governor Rendell said. "This is a very exciting step toward further promoting the region to this unique international audience. I believe that one day the Williamsport Grand Slam Parade will become one of the finest small town parades in America."

The Pennsylvania Tourism Office, under the state Department of Community and Economic Development, is dedicated to fulfilling the needs and aspirations of travelers by presenting them with the information and resources they need to plan and enjoy the activities, attractions and destinations that are uniquely Pennsylvania.
