Annual Survey Also Suggests Campgrounds Will See Heavy RV Traffic

MINNEAPOLIS, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of RVers will hit the road to celebrate our nation's birthday this Independence Day weekend and chances are they'll be displaying America's colors to show their patriotism. According to a recent survey by Funroads.com, more than 80 percent of RVers will demonstrate their patriotism by wearing red, white and blue, flying the flag and more while they travel this July Fourth.

"RVers are a patriotic bunch all year-round," said Mike Kline, marketing manager for Onan's towable RV division. "They celebrate their freedom to travel by showing their loyal spirit on their RV and on themselves. These folks love the U.S.A."

But where will we see these patriotic travelers this Independence Day weekend? Well according to the survey, mostly at campgrounds across the nation. Last year, the highest overall average occupancy rate in parks and campgrounds throughout the U.S. was reported for the July Fourth weekend at nearly 80 percent. The Funroads.com survey predicts a similar pattern for this year as nearly 50 percent of RVers said they will stay at campgrounds during the weekend. Another 13 percent said they plan to "dry camp" -- parking anywhere without or with limited amenities be it at a summer event, in the middle of the wilderness, a Wal-Mart parking lot or even the side of the road.

The survey also explored some fun aspects of RVer's lifestyles and found that their patriotism extends to what they listen to on the road as well with more than 40 percent of those surveyed saying "Proud to Be an American" is their favorite all-American tune. "God Bless America" and "America the Beautiful" tied for second.

As for current gas prices, don't think these will slow RVers either. The survey also found that despite estimates of gas peaking at more than $2.30 a gallon, 82 percent of RVers are still planning to take their scheduled summer RV trips. While 42 percent did say they were planning to scale back their trips somewhat by sticking to visiting the states immediately around their home state, another 40 percent said that gas prices would have to hit $10 per gallon before they would consider altering their RVing plans.

"This determination shows just how passionate RVers are about their lifestyle," said Kline. "The advantages of RVing such as greater freedom, comfort, economy and control continue to outweigh the higher costs of fuel."
