New Species of Gecko Discovered at CC Africa's Sossusvlei Lodge
Namib Rand Nature Reserve, Nambia - October 10, 2006:- CC Africa is excited to announce the discovery of a new species of gecko, spotted by astronomer and retired biologist Miles Paul during a recent visit to CC Africa's Sossusvlei Lodge in Namibia. A photo was taken of the never-before-seen gecko and sent to reptile expert Bill Branch, who declared it a new species called Pachydactylus Mclachlani. The gecko is only known from this one sighting.
This new species joins a host of other fascinating desert-adapted wildlife that can be sighted at Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge. Known as "The Living Desert", the Namib comes alive with a unique community of desert-adapted beetles, spiders, lizards, golden moles and other creatures, whose presence is most evident from their telltale tracks left in the fine sand. Larger mammals such as oryx, springbok, Burchell's zebra and giraffe are most commonly encountered on the plains along the dry watercourses, and predators include leopard, spotted hyena and cheetah to name a few.
Guests at Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge can explore this fascinating desertscape on scenic drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, quadbiking and walking trails, as well as enjoy a host of other activities, at additional cost, such as hot air ballooning and excursions to the famous Sossusvlei sand dunes and Sesriem Canyon. The Lodge is also renowned for its exciting bush breakfasts and dune dinners in dramatic desert locations. After dinner, a resident astronomer will enthral guests as he reveals the mysteries of the magnificent desert sky.
Overlooking the stark yet beautiful Namib Desert, Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge offers a sophisticated desert experience and consists of 10 stone and glass desert villas designed to capture the splendor and solitude of the desert. Each shaded air-conditioned suite features a private veranda, split-level bathroom and outdoor shower, and is spread out along the curve of the escarpment allowing absolute privacy in spectacular desert surrounds.
