Portsmouth NH Celebrates Peace Treaty Centennial

Aug 6 Troop Parade, Navy Visit, Governor’s Dinner

What: Portsmouth NH celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty

When: August 6th through September 5th

Where: Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Seacoast Region

Why: On August 8, 1905, Russian and Japanese diplomats arrived in Portsmouth to negotiate an end to “World War Zero” — a bloody land and sea war fought in Manchuria. After 30 days of formal and informal negotiations, the diplomats signed the Portsmouth Peace Treaty on September 5, 1905. President Theodore Roosevelt won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for the effort: the only time two ‘foreign’ powers negotiated an end to formal warfare on American soil. Portsmouth is commemorating the Centennial with:

2-4 pm: Portsmouth Welcoming Parade organized by the NH National Guard, as it was in 1905, and featuring a Military Appreciation celebration for 600+ Navy, Coast Guard, Air and Army National Guard troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

7-11 pm: Governor’s Dinner at Wentworth By the Sea Hotel, host in 1905 to both Russian and Japanese diplomats and their delegations. The dinner recreates the hospitality of the owners of the hotel and the NH Governor. Remarks offered by Russian and Japanese representatives, Peter Randall, author of There Are No Victors Here, Governor John Lynch and 7 living former Governors of New Hampshire.
