Demands By City Make Fireworks Show Cost Prohibitive
Proposed Independence Day Country Concert Cancelled Due to City Permit Delay
LONG BEACH, Calif., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Queen Mary regrets to announce that the Annual July 4th Tribute to America Fireworks Extravaganza is cancelled this year as a result of very high financial demands by the City of Long Beach. The city is demanding that the Queen Mary pay up to $70,000 in public safety costs before approving a permit for July 4 fireworks, a requirement not insisted upon in the past. The Queen Mary also has to pay $50,000 for the fireworks. The proposed July 4th concert, a "Country Salute to the USA" featuring SheDaisy, Neal McCoy, Fanny Grace, and Tin Rooster, has also been cancelled due to a delay by the city of Long Beach to approve a permit to hold the concert in the Queen Mary Special Events Park.
The absence of this year's fireworks show will be the end of a 21-year tradition. The loss of this major event, which draws between 4-5,000 people to the Queen Mary and also brings tens of thousands of people to Long Beach, will impact businesses all around the city.
Guests can spend the day touring the historic ship with a self-guided tour, experience the special effects "Ghosts & Legends of the Queen Mary" show, explore a real Russian, Foxtrot-class submarine or take in one of three guided tours (Behind-the-Scenes, World War II or Ghost Encounters). Queen Mary general admission is $22.95 for adults, $19.95 for seniors and military and $11.95 for children ages 5-11 and includes a self-guided tour and the Ghosts & Legends show, celebrating five years. The Scorpion Submarine, Haunted Encounters Tour, Behind-the-Scenes or World War II Guided Tours are available for an additional fee. The parking fee is $10.00. Free Passport shuttles from downtown Long Beach and the AquaBus water taxi from the Aquarium of the Pacific will both be operating, and access from the Los Angeles area is available via the Metro Blue Line Trains.
